| Born in Pasadena, California, Steve's background
in art covers a large range starting out as an illustrator at the age of
18. He has worked in industrial art, been art director of
advertising agencies and owned his own art service, all in Southern
California. During this period, he also owned a dog breeding kennel
and was an all-breed dog handler, licensed by the American Kennel Club.
In 1971, Steve and his family moved to the small, picturesque mountain
community of Weaverville in Northern California, where he has pursued a
fine arts career in earnest. His love for animals and understanding
of anatomy shows in his paintings and bronzes, and Steve has illustrated
anatomy books on horses and dogs. He has
been an American Kennel Club dog judge since 1969 and currently judges all
breeds at shows around the world. All this has been a terrific background for his dog art.
Steve has illustrated books and specific breed
standards for The American Kennel Club. He won the Westminster Award
in the Contemporary Dog Artists Contest, held in New York. He also
has won Best of Show at the National Juried Fine Arts Competition
dedicated to canine art, held in Wichita, Kansas. Steve was chosen
as the Pedigree Dog Calendar artist, 1994 to 1995. Pedigree
commissioned Steve to paint 16 oil paintings for this project. His
art has been included in the permanent collection of The Dog Museum of
America in St. Louis, Mo. He is known not only as a dog artist but
also is highly respected as a dog person! Steve is also known and
collected as a Western artist and is a member of the prestigious American
Indian and Cowboy Artists, Inc. In January 1989, he had a one man
show of his art in Manhattan held at the King Gallery it included pencil
,watercolors, oils and bronzes. All depicting formal fox hunting
scenes. However, he says, his real love is
depicting Sporting dogs in action.
Steve has had shows in many areas including
New York and other venues all across the United States, and has won many
awards. He is held in high esteem in the art world, and his work is
in collections around the globe.
The majority of Steve Hubbell's art work are
commissions by dog lovers, private collectors and large corporations.
He is considered a highly collectable canine artist. Most of the
paintings you see in the Gallery Section were commissions.
